If the worst comes to the worst, there are procedures laid down for managing redundancy, which I can explain in simple terms. I can also provide sample letters and documents for you to use.  This service is available wherever you are, though it’s based on English law so might not be relevant in other countries.

If you are in West Yorkshire, I can come to you and chair meetings, conduct interviews and generally take the heat off you. Apart from the personal distress to you and your staff, it is also important that someone on the management committee or the Board remains outside the redundancy procedure in case of appeals. You may want to keep yourself free to take on this role if necessary.

Large organisations often have HR departments who manage the redundancy procedure, but if you are a small firm or third sector organisation it’s unlikely you can call on anybody else to help. If you have a small Board it might not be feasible for you to undertake the whole of the procedure yourselves.
